Children could have stopped going to school out of fear. Others just do not know how to bring it up. Many students do not want their family to get involved, for fear that that the bullying may get worse. Phrases and words like “loser”, “hate”, “hope you die” and “suicide” could be trigger words, in which, if said more than 3 times in a conversation, a warning would be posted to a designated IP address so that whoever uses the computer would be informed of the possible problem.Īnother misconception about cyberbullying the belief that students will tell their parents or an adult at the school if they are being harassed, threatened, or bothered. Although there would have to be restrictions based on privacy, it could work where certain words would sound alarms to the network. With the help of social media websites, schools and parents could be notified if anything harmful is being said. Current research shows that “43% of students have been cyber bullied in the last year” (NCPC, “Teens and Cyberbullying”). This cyber epidemic has had a major effect on the way in which bullies are able to reach their victims. Students are also able to create separate accounts, one that their parents know about and another for them to use secretly (Dehue, Bolman, Völlink, "Cyberbullying: Youngsters' Experiences and Parental Perception."). Most of the time that students are online, they are unsupervised (NCPC, “Teens and Cyberbullying”). Studies show, however, that students between the ages of 8-18 are spending an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes per day with electronic devices (Toppo, Kids' electronic media use jumps to 53 hours a week”). As cyber bullying increases, I would argue that websites should have mandatory reporting, where they must report suspicious behavior not only to the parents, but to the schools as well.ġ2321Some may argue that parents alone can monitor what is being said online to and from their student. With technology becoming more and more apparent in a youths life, the amount of cyberbullying is on the rise. They could be the person who sits next to you in math class, the stay at home mom down the street, or even the person you call your best friend. They are just like the playground bully, only worse. Or they can just start with the threats and name calling. They are someone who makes an random account and can either befriend you and then all of a sudden start with messages about how they want you to die and how body likes you. What if you signed on to your social media website or opened your phone and say a message from an anonymous person saying “I can ruin your life. Now what if you didn’t know who the bully was. It is nothing to serious, you can punish the bully for you know exactly who they are. There will be name calling, and maybe some threats thrown out there but it is just fun and games. Kids making fun of other kids wither it be classmates, siblings or even strangers. This is something that has been around since anyone can remember.
